The purpose of this blog isn’t just about how to write eBooks, it’s how to quickly derive income from ebooks.
This means the focus is a little different from the start.
Making money on a product requires only three things:
1) A product
2) A market
3) A process to bring them together
In my case, the product is an ebook and the process is the Internet, however the reason most eBooks fail is because they don’t identify the market first!
It’s very easy to spend days or weeks or months writing an ebook, tweaking a blog, adding a facebook page or playing on Twitter . Trust me, I know. This time round I am going to identify the market first, then the process and finally then the ebook idea.
How am I going to identify my market? Wel,l to start off I want it to be something that interests me, something where there is lot of people, and something at which I am good.
In my particular case, I considered some of my interests and strengths (more about weaknesses later). I happen to be a doctor with about 70000 patients of experience, I love to read, I love to learn. I like to play with Internet.
I came up with quite a few ideas fairly quickly. A book about the influenza epidemic in 1918 with emphasis on real time news stories. A book on iPhone efficiency for doctors. A book on using meditation for weight loss.
Although writing about all of these subjects offers some interest for me, I finally settled on a Howto ebook about a medical search engine called PubMed targeted towards bloggers.
Although Pubmed does interest me as a physician, I am picking principally based on the market. Using Googles Keywords tools I recognized that there are roughly 2 million searches for the “pubmed” term each month. Using alexa.com I know that there are a significant number of daily users. I will initially limit myself to bloggers, because a) there are a lot of bloggers looking for ways to generate interesting topics, and b) having worked with pubmed and taking their training courses and tutorials I am pretty sure I have a lot to offer, a c) most bloggers are technically astute enough to feel comfortable with eBooks.
Anyway it’s only Day 0. I may modify my plan, but now my defined market is bloggers that may benefit by using PubMed for content generation. Nest step will be considering the process I am going to use to sell the book, consider titles, and then – and only then, start to outline and write the book.
